Vintage West German Pottery Jug Vase – Scheurich 473-20
One must acknowledge the sheer, unapologetic determination of mid-century West German ceramicists to coat everything in shades of coffee, cream, and mid-continental angst. This robust jug vase by Scheurich—bearing the classic 473-20 form—is a splendidly tactile example of the era's quieter, more civilised output.
Rather than the aggressive, froth-heavy eruptions of the extreme Fat Lava movement, this specimen opts for a deeply satisfying layered gloss glaze. A rich, dark molasses base gives way to a creamy white horizontal band, which finishes into a finely mottled, sandy brown throat and handle. It is a dense, reassuringly heavy piece of continental design, featuring a sturdy loop handle that looks as though it genuinely expects to be used for hoisting ale rather than standing about looking ornamental.
Condition:
Remarkably well-preserved with its high-gloss finish entirely intact. The base rim exhibits some light, entirely honest flecks of glaze wear and minor rough spots from decades of resting on hard sideboards, which happily saves you the tedious burden of maintaining an artificial perfection. The interior is clean, and the body is completely free from structural cracks, hairline fractures, or modern restorations.
