19th Century French Relief Enamel Street Sign Rue Récolet Nîmes Canton System
Before town planning became a matter of uniform, digital coordination, navigating a historic French city required a rather more regional logic. This late 19th-century heavy relief enamel street sign from Nîmes is a monumental survivor of that era, clearly stamped with its administrative coordinates: the 9e Section, 3e Canton.
The sign designates the 'Rue Récolet'—named after the Franciscan order of monks who established their presence in the region centuries prior. The lettering is executed in a beautiful, heavily raised white relief enamel against the iconic deep French cobalt blue background.
Rather than the sterile reproduction plaques found in modern gift shops, this is a genuine piece of French urban history. Having spent decades enduring the elements of southern France, it possesses a dramatic, sculptural presence that makes it an exceptional industrial interior accent.
Condition Report:
This piece features a heavy, authentic patina with substantial enamel loss and exposed oxidation to the central lettering and corners, as clearly shown in the photography. The surface has been professionally conserved: cleaned with specialist Vulpex soap, the exposed iron treated with boiled linseed oil to halt degradation, and the entire plaque sealed in archival Renaissance wax. The surface is entirely stable, clean, and ready for interior display.
