Vintage Pollards Large Spiked Flower Frog – Commercial Window Dressing Kenzan (3.1 Inch)

This is another robust specimen from Pollards, the mid-century shopfitting firm that clearly believed floristry equipment should be built to the same engineering tolerances as a dockyard crane. This is a pleasantly wide, heavy 3.1-inch kenzan, explicitly manufactured to give display designers total control over large, top-heavy structural branches in department store windows.

Unlike the previous painted example, the vibrant turquoise-green visible on the lower reaches of these pins is pure, honest chemistry. Decades of immersion in water have caused the high-quality brass spikes to develop their own natural verdigris patina, which contrasts handsomely against the dull, dark grey of the heavy lead base.

The underside bears the classic, deeply stamped "POLLARDS" maker's mark, surrounded by a fine, crazed network of oxidation that saves you the trouble of inflicting its first century of character. The pins on this particular unit are remarkably straight, sharp, and uniformly spaced, giving it excellent structural integrity. It is completely ready to return to active service in a shallow stoneware basin, or to anchor a substantial stack of business cards on a workshop desk.
