Large Scheurich 553-38 West German Floor Vase – 15 Inch Mid-Century Fat Lava Pottery
The mid-century German ceramic industry possessed a singular ability to make massive, utilitarian clay vessels feel entirely organic, a feat perfectly illustrated by this 38 cm floor vase. The model 553-38 abandons the harsh, aggressive angles often associated with the era in favour of a smooth, swelling, almost amphora-like silhouette that transitions into a short, ribbed collar.
The glaze execution is a wonderfully classic example of targeted kiln migration. The body is dominated by a deep, frothy, cream-coloured glaze that gradually thins and bleeds as it moves vertically and horizontally, giving way to a rich, warm caramel band at the shoulder and a dense, dark bitter-chocolate brown at the base and rim. The fine, vertical crystalline trails left behind by the flowing glaze provide a soft, textured finish that rewards closer inspection without demanding too much from a room's aesthetic.
It functions beautifully as a substantial floor-standing anchor for dried botanical branches or as a solo architectural statement on a low mid-century sideboard. The unglazed foot ring surrounds a clear, deeply stamped "553-38" form code alongside the mandatory "W. GERMANY" mark of origin. It survives in pristine, museum-grade vintage condition, completely unblemished by chips, hairline cracks, or internal water scaling.
