Before public spaces were dominated by uniform plastic signage, municipal authorities used heavy stamped steel and molten glass to mark their thoroughfares. This large, authentic late 19th or early 20th-century French relief enamel street sign is an imposing piece of urban history, designating the "Rue Gustave Carde."
Gustave Carde (1836–1917) was a celebrated French industrial engineer and pioneering manufacturer based in nearby Bordeaux, famous for engineering early railway carriages and aeronautical components. Sourced directly from a dealer in Bergerac, this heavy plaque is rendered in the classic, iconic combination of deep French cobalt blue and heavily raised white enamel lettering.
Possessing a commanding physical scale and a dramatic, authentic patina earned from decades on a southwest French street corner, it makes a striking industrial statement piece for an interior wall, hallway, or commercial space.
Condition Report & Conservation:
The sign exhibits a heavy, authentic urban patina with substantial historic enamel loss, corrosion, and bullet-like impact scarring to the central "RUE" lettering and outer white borders, as clearly documented in the photography. The entire piece has been professionally conserved: thoroughly cleaned with specialist Vulpex liquid soap, the exposed iron treated with boiled linseed oil to halt any further oxidation, and the entire surface sealed with premium archival Renaissance wax. It is entirely clean, structurally stable, and ready for interior mounting.
