Before the mid-20th century culinary shift toward highly processed, free-flowing table salt mixed with anti-caking agents, humanity engaged with salt in its natural, granular, and aggressively corrosive state. It required a vessel specifically designed to contain its appetite. This late Victorian or Edwardian silver-plated open salt cellar by the renowned Sheffield makers Walker & Hall is a beautifully executed solution to an age-old dining problem.
Standing on four wonderfully cast, stylized hoof feet, the heavily silver-plated body features a elegant wavy rim. Inside sits its original, deep cobalt blue glass liner, which serves both to prevent the salt from immediately devouring the metal and to provide a stark, highly satisfying visual contrast against the silver.
It is perfectly sized to sit beside a modern dinner plate, offering a far more civilized way to season a meal than pinching from a cardboard box.
Condition Report:
The exterior silver plate is in excellent, bright condition with a deep shine and no operational thin spots or brassing. True to its original purpose, the interior base beneath the glass liner shows the expected pitting and dark corrosion caused by decades of historic salt contact. The blue glass liner remains completely free of chips, cracks, or flea bites. The base is clearly stamped with the full Walker & Hall Sheffield maker's marks, pennant symbol, and the registered design number 297349.
