There was a time when lighting a cigarette or a hearth fire did not involve the sterile strike of a disposable plastic lighter. It required a match, which in turn deserved a vessel of proper weight and presence. This vintage heavy brass matchbox sleeve, dating from the early to mid-20th century, is an excellent example of compact, functional desk brassware.
The top surface features an engraved Chinoiserie scene depicting a figure seated among stylized bamboo foliage, framed by a neat geometric border. The brass has developed a warm, authentic honey patina over decades of handling, devoid of the overly bright, lacquered finish seen on modern reproductions.
Tucked neatly inside the sleeve is a vintage box of 'Criterion' safety matches, explicitly stamped as being made in the USSR. It is a rather delightful, unbothered juxtaposition of cultural aesthetics—an elegant orientalist brass cover holding a piece of mid-century Soviet utility.
Condition Report:
The brass sleeve is in solid, stable vintage condition, showing honest surface wear, light scratches, and mild interior oxidisation consistent with age and use. The sleeve retains its structural shape perfectly, gripping the matchbox firmly while leaving the striking strips cleanly exposed at the sides. The enclosed Soviet-era matchbox shows minor shelf wear to the edges but remains intact but empty.
