Vintage Boxed Pollards Large Spiked Flower Frog – Mid-Century 3.3 Inch Kenzan
Finding a mid-century commercial flower frog is common enough; finding one that has managed to retain its original, structurally intact cardboard packaging through decades of damp greenhouse storage is something of a minor miracle. The box is an absolute triumph of vintage graphic design, featuring a striking teal and cream mid-century litho print with bold typography declaring it the "Pollards Pinholder Flower Arranger."
The inner lid still carries the original manufacturer's stamp: "We recommend that this article is not used in a metal container," a wonderfully polite warning from a bygone era regarding the galvanic reaction between lead and iron basins.
The kenzan itself is a large, heavy 3.3-inch specimen. The lead base carries a stamped "POLLARDS" mark on the underside and a charmingly mottled red-oxide rim. The dense cluster of brass pins is straight, sharp, and uniformly sound, showing only the lightest hints of historical use. While the frog remains fully capable of anchoring heavy, woody botanical displays, the presence of the box elevates this from a simple garden tool to a genuine piece of mid-century social history.
The Box Premium:
Original packaging routinely doubles the desirability of mid-century utilitarian wares. While a loose Pollards frog of this scale is relatively rare a boxed on eis in a different league!
