There is an undeniable, low-slung elegance to a mid-century teapot that chooses width over height. This final installment from the Abbes Plate service presents a remarkably handsome silhouette, resting on four delicate acanthus feet and framed by an exceptionally ornate pierced gallery rim. Complete with its original insulated ebonised handle and matching lid finial, it looks every bit the archetypal centrepiece for a proper British afternoon tea. While modern tastes lean toward utility, there remains a dedicated cadre of collectors who recognize that tea poured from a vessel of this structural calibre simply tastes better—even if its role is strictly theatrical.

Honest Anatomy

This is an electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) footed teapot, measuring approximately 28 cm (11 inches) from the tip of the elegant spout to the outermost curve of the handle, and standing 12.5 cm high. Externally, the silver plating has cleaned up beautifully to a mirror finish, highlighting the crisp detailing of the pierced fretwork. The ebonised handle is rock-solid, and the hinged lid operates with satisfying alignment. True to its decades of domestic service, the interior tells a much darker tale. It is completely coated in a deep, iridescent black layer of historic tannin tea staining, accompanied by internal plate wear. While a heavy application of bicarbonate of soda might soften the patina, it is presented honestly here as a magnificent display piece or a dramatic prop for a vintage dresser layout.
