Retro Scheurich West Germany 401-28 Fat Lava Ceramic Jug – 1970s Mid-Century Art Pottery
This striking handled 1970s West German vase is a fine example of Scheurich art pottery
The classic model 401-28 shape—celebrated for its rigid, architectural cylinder block body contrasted against that bold, perfectly circular finger ring handle—serves as the canvas. This particular specimen is dipped in a brilliantly deep, high-gloss bitter chocolate brown glaze. The central decorative band is loaded with a thick, textured stripe of vibrant, fiery cadmium orange-red. The frothy, bubbled edges where the red reactive glaze collides with the dark brown base create a unique, dramatic volcanic bleed.
This piece makes an exceptionally strong standalone statement on a brutalist mantlepiece, a retro sideboard, or mixed into an active collection of West German Art Pottery. The underside is crisply moulded with the unmistakable "401-28" form code and the "W. GERMANY" signature.
