Rare 19thC French Relief Enamel Street Sign - Rue Récolet, Nîmes - Canton System
A Rare Piece of 19th-Century French Municipal History
This is an authentic, heavy-gauge vitreous enamel street sign for Rue Récolet (now Rue des Récollets) from the historic city of Nîmes, France.
Unlike standard modern replacements, this plaque features the rare and highly sought-after administrative grid markings, identifying it as part of the 9th Section and 3rd Canton. This specific numbering system was used by 19th-century French municipal authorities for judicial and police administration before urban signage was simplified in the early 20th century.
Features & Provenance:
- Construction: Genuine cobalt blue vitreous enamel on a heavy steel plate with raised (relief) white lettering.
- Origin: Sourced directly from a dealer with provenance linked to the Mairie (Mayor’s office) of Nîmes during a period of urban signage modernization.
- Historical Significance: Named after the Order of Friars Minor Recollect, whose historic convent was a landmark in central Nîmes.
Condition & Professional Conservation:
The sign retains its original "street-worn" character, with authentic chips to the enamel and oxidation to the base metal that attest to its decades of exposure to the Mediterranean elements.
It has been sympathetically stabilized and conserved using museum-grade materials:
- Deep cleaned with Vulpex soap (a non-acidic potassium oleate soap used by conservators).
- The reverse has been treated with boiled linseed oil to provide a moisture-resistant barrier to the exposed steel.
- The entire piece has been finished with a micro-crystalline Renaissance Wax coating to seal the surface and provide a beautiful, soft luster while preventing further oxidation.
