Large Vintage West German Floor Vase – Scheurich 553-38
It appears the kilns of Kleinheubach were running at absolute capacity during the mid-1970s, as we have yet another iteration of Scheurich's dependable 553-38 silhouette. This particular floor vase relies on a beautifully balanced, banded landscape glaze that feels entirely rooted in late mid-century earth tones.
The straight-sided barrel form is treated to a sequence of multi-layered dip glazes that transition down the body. A textured, frothy sand-and-cream collar flows into a rich amber-brown band, which is sharply interrupted by a central, dripping horizon line of dark espresso gloss. The pattern repeats below, finishing in an organic, scalloped drip across a dark base. Standing at thirty-eight centimetres, it carries that same reassuringly dense, architectural stability that allows it to anchor a room without the need for theatrical volcanic eruptions.
Condition:
Presented in exceptionally clean vintage condition. The multi-layered gloss glaze is smooth and vibrant, completely free from chips, structural cracks, or modern interventions. The unglazed base rim shows completely natural, honest shelf friction and light surface scuffing from decades of resting on domestic sideboards or floors—happily sparing you the awkwardness of inflicting its very first mark.
