Large Vintage West German Floor Vase – Scheurich 553-38
There is a wonderful, dramatic contrast to the way Scheurich approached their multi-layered dip glazes on their larger forms. This substantial floor vase—sharing the straight-sided, collared-neck 553-38 silhouette with its sister pieces—opts for a highly graphic, undulating wave effect that feels entirely representative of 1970s continental design.
The piece features a deeply saturated, dark chocolate-brown gloss base glaze, over which thick horizontal bands of a heavily textured, foaming cream and sand run-glaze have been layered. The glaze cascades down the barrel body in distinct, organic drips, creating a highly tactile surface that shifts beautifully depending on the angle of the light. Standing at thirty-eight centimetres, it carries an immense, stable architectural weight that perfectly anchors a modern interior corner.
Condition:
The piece is in exceptional vintage condition. The thick, glossy glaze across the collar and body remains entirely free from chips, structural cracks, or modern restorations. The unglazed base rim shows light, entirely honest shelf friction and minor scuffs from decades of occupying domestic floor space, saving you the tedious concern of inflicting its very first mark.
