Large Vintage West German Floor Jug Vase – Scheurich 429-45
One has to marvel at the sheer, unbridled structural arrogance required to manufacture a handled ceramic jug standing forty-five centimetres tall. This colossal specimen by Scheurich—molded in the imposing 429-45 silhouette—is less of a vase and more of a permanent architectural feature.
The piece is coated in a deep, highly reflective molasses-brown gloss glaze that flows over a wide, cylindrical body. This expansive surface is broken up by four distinct horizontal bands of relief-molded geometric ovals, finished in a contrasting matte ochre that highlights the brutalist, repeating detail. Complete with an oversized, angular loop handle that looks as though it expects to lift literal gallons of water, it is an incredibly stable, heavy statement piece that commands a room with absolute mid-century authority.
Condition:
Remarkably well-preserved given its immense scale and vulnerability. The high-gloss glaze across the throat and body maintains a clean, glassy depth. The unglazed base rim shows entirely expected, honest shelf friction and minor scuffs from decades of occupying floor space in domestic settings, saving you the absolute terror of leaving its very first mark. Completely free from structural cracks, chips to the relief bands, or modern restorations.
