J H Naylor, Wigan Miner's Lamp

£150.00

A JH Naylor of Wigan miner's lamp - brass body with galvanised steel bonnet. This is an unusual piece and quite rare - it has a rack and pinion worm drive gearing to the wick adjustment, matching serial numbers to the body and base and most importantly what appears to be original glass with logo and 57 + 57 markings. I believe this has seen use underground as when it was gently cleaned I found pit dust and that familiar "underground' smell. There is a small chip to the glass shown in the pictures. There is only one internal gauze cone, I believe there should be two cones with the gauze markings to the glass stating 57 + 57 indicating two gauze cones. The plaque on the front is crooked which would be a further indication of actual use as it would have been maintained by the lamp man at the head who would have hurriedly repaired it and possibly put it on slightly crooked. The amp hook is missing from the top, rather than replace it for display we have left it original as found rather than adding a modern replacement. All in all a rare miner's lamp in original condition - we have purposely left it with the existing patina, it has had a gentle clean, the new owner can decide how they want it, original or restored.
