Antique Swedish Hultafors Folding Rule Boxwood and Brass Zig-Zag Ruler
While a standard plastic ruler from a stationer tells you the length of a piece of paper, it does so with zero charm. This antique four-fold folding rule by Hultafors corrects that lack of character entirely. Crafted in Sweden, it represents the early ingenuity of Hilmer Kollén, who invented the folding rule joint in 1883 to help Sweden transition to the metric system.
This specific example is a wonderful crossover piece, stamped "Sv. Mått & Tumstockfabriken Hultafors" alongside the designation "Engelskt Mått" (English Measure), meaning it was built specifically for export to the British market. Made from robust boxwood with rich brass fittings, it folds down smoothly into a highly pocketable, compact format.
Honest Anatomy:
The ruler shows the deep, honest golden patina of century-old boxwood that has spent decades in a joiner's apron. The stamped markings remain perfectly legible. Crucially, the internal brass spring joints retain their click and tension, folding and unfolding without stiffness or unwanted slack. There are minor historical stains and light surface oxidation to the metal hinges, which saves you the worry of its first scratch. It is perfectly straight when fully extended.
Dimensions:
