An authentic piece of post-nationalisation British industrial history, this heavy cast iron wagon plate carries a fantastic connection to regional transport heritage. Sourced at the Sunbury Antiques Market from an established railwayana dealer, this plate was cast at the historic Ashford Works in Kent during the early years of the unified British Railways network.
The plate features prominent raised cast lettering and numbering across its face, reading: E, STANDARD 13 TONS, 1949, ASHFORD, 312815. The prefix "E" indicates it was allocated to the Eastern Region of British Railways, while the "13 TONS" reflects the standard freight capacity for domestic open or box wagons of the post-war reconstruction era.
This plate is the final variation from our cast iron collection. The front face has been historically repainted in classic railway black with contrasting white detailing for high-legibility shelf or wall display. The reverse side remains completely un-restored, preserving its original, untouched iron patina with genuine trackside pitting and oxidation. The two square mounting holes remain clear for straightforward hanging.
A wonderful local interest piece or industrial decor accent, perfect for anyone collecting Southern or Eastern region railway memorabilia.
