There is an incredibly handsome warmth to silver plate when it has been laid over a solid brass base. Unlike the stark, clinical mirror finish of modern plating, this antique 12-inch salver by Harrison Brothers has emerged from a century of storage with a distinct, buttery "moonlight" glow—a soft, golden-silver patina that interior designers spend a great deal of time trying to replicate artificially.
Crafted in Birmingham, the salver features a beautifully resolved, multi-scalloped rim finished with a crisp egg-and-dart molded border. The face of the tray is heavily chased with a continuous band of trailing grapevine foliage and hanging fruit clusters, all revolving around a central vacant laurel wreath cartouche that remains entirely ready for an engraving should you feel so inclined.
It is a substantial, heavy-gauge piece of traditional British hollowware. Its generous 12-inch diameter makes it an exceptionally useful size for holding a full decanter and glasses on a sideboard, acting as an elegant tray for afternoon tea, or simply adding a touch of country-house substance to a coffee table.
