While standard folding rules are content simply measuring a straight line, this late 19th-century example by the revered Birmingham maker E. Preston & Sons is an entirely more sophisticated tool. This is a premium four-fold boxwood rule featuring an integrated, heavy brass protractor hinge. The large brass rounded joint is beautifully engraved with degree increments from 0 to 180, allowing a carpenter or shipwright to calculate complex roof pitches or joinery angles directly on the timber.

The face is clearly stamped "E. Preston & Sons Birmm Eng" alongside the model designation "No. 3281." Edward Preston pieces are highly sought after by tool purists for their exceptional build quality, easily rivalling the more common Rabone counterparts of the Victorian era.

Honest Anatomy:
The rule is in remarkable condition for its age. The boxwood retains a vibrant, warm golden coloration with minimal staining and exceptionally crisp, perfectly legible stamped markings. The extensive brass fittings—including the central protractor plate—remain bright and unbent. The folding joints retain excellent alignment, closing tightly and extending straight without unwanted looseness. Faint surface wear and light pocket scuffs are present, precisely as they should be on a genuine heritage tool.
