This mid-century silver-plated gallery salver by the storied Sheffield makers Viners is a satisfyingly weighted reminder of those standards.
Struck from their premium 'Alpha Plate' line, the tray features a beautifully pierced vertical gallery rim and a face heavily chased with an elaborate, swirling floral and foliage design. Viners specifically employed this deep chasing to give the tray texture, ensuring that glassware wouldn't slide about during transit. The reverse features their prominent corporate mark, granted by the Cutlers Company in 1836, an administrative detail that guarantees proper Sheffield pedigree.
It is a highly functional piece of mid-century hollowware, sized perfectly to support a cocktail shaker or act as a handsome, permanent station for decanters on a sideboard.

Condition Report:
The salver is in structurally sound, solid vintage condition. The silver plating remains bright throughout the gallery and outer borders. True to its age and authentic domestic history, the central plain reservoir and surrounding chased channels show a scattering of minor black pitting and small spots of oxidation, as clearly detailed in the close-up photography. We have left these entirely honest markers of utility exactly as found; the plating remains stable and does not suffer from any major base-metal bleeding or operational thinning.

Dimensions

• Diameter: Approx 12.2 inches (31 cm)

https://aniceoldthing.com/products/vintage-viners-of-sheffield-alpha-plate-chased-salver-round-gallery-tray
